Achieving Recovery: The Positive Benefits of Sobriety

Deciding to Quit Drinking

Being sober can have a positive impact on all aspects of an individual’s life, allowing for greater overall satisfaction and well-being. While every person’s journey is unique, reaching out for help and utilizing available resources can greatly increase your chances of achieving and maintaining sobriety.

Benefits of Quitting

Alcohol can have a harmful effect on many of the organs and systems in the body, including the brain, heart, immune system, liver, pancreas and stomach. Over time, your body can begin to recover from the influence of alcohol, and you can expect:

  • Improved sleep
  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Decreased digestive issues
  • Mentally clarity
  • Healthier weight
  • Improved immunity
  • Lowered risk of cancer, stroke and heart attack

Getting Help

Once the decision is made to quit drinking alcohol, the next step is making a plan and building a support network. Don’t try to go in alone. Quitting is much easier when you have people you can lean on for encouragement, comfort and guidance. Seek help and support from:

  • Trusted family members and friends who do not drink
  • Your primary care physician
  • Support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA): www.aa.org
  • Your Employee Assistance Program that can connect you to a substance use professional for confidential counseling and education

Your Employee Assistance Program provides free and confidential assessment and counseling services. If you are interested in learning more about your benefits, call BHS at 800-245-1150 to speak to your dedicated Care Coordinator.
